Are you disappointed or confused by a mark or final result you have received and want to have it reviewed? The SSA Advocacy Service (SAS) is here to help you understand your options and guide you through the process.
SSA Advocates can assist you in requesting a Review of Assessment (during a teaching period) or a Review of Results (after final results are released). These are formal processes outlined in Swinburne’s Assessment Procedure and Review of Results Procedure.
During a teaching period: Review of Assessment
If you believe your mark for an individual assessment task is incorrect, you may request a review.
You can:
Ask your Unit Convenor to confirm that the mark was calculated and recorded correctly, or
Request a re-mark of the assessment task.
When can I request this?
You must make your request within 10 working days from the date the assessment mark is released.
How do I request this?
Contact your Unit Convenor by email. If you are requesting a re-mark, you must provide clear supporting evidence that the work was not marked in accordance with the published marking criteria.
What happens after a re-mark?
If a re-mark is approved, your final mark for the task may be higher, lower, or stay the same as the original mark.
For more details, refer to Swinburne’s Assessment Procedure.
End of Teaching Period: Review of Results
If you believe your final result for a unit is incorrect, you can apply for a Review of Results.
You may apply for either:
An Administrative Review, or
An Academic Review
When can I apply?
You must submit your application within 5 working days of the official results release date. If exceptional circumstances prevented you from applying on time, you may still be eligible if you can provide evidence.
How do I apply?
You can apply via the Review of Results online form on Swinburne’s website.
Types of Review of Results
Administrative Review: Checks whether:
All your assessment marks were recorded correctly, and
Your final grade was calculated and recorded accurately.
Academic Review: If you believe your final result is unfair due to:
A misapplication of the marking criteria, or
A misapplication of a university policy or procedure.
You must provide evidence to support your claim.
Note: If your work has already been re-marked or double-marked, a further review is generally not accepted unless a procedural error can be demonstrated.
Conceded Pass (CP)
If you narrowly fail a unit and receive a final mark between 45–49%, you may be eligible for a Conceded Pass (CP) under certain conditions.
A Conceded Pass:
May be awarded at the discretion of your faculty.
Is typically only available if you are close to completing your course.
Does not apply to all units, especially core or accredited professional units (e.g. nursing, law, engineering)
If you believe a CP grade should have been considered but was not, you may be able to request a Review of Results. SSA Advocates can help assess whether this is a suitable option for your case.
Important: CP grades are awarded automatically if you are eligible. You usually do not need to apply—but you can request a review if you believe a CP was overlooked.
