Last to Complete

Updated: 3 days ago

Are you almost finished your course but have a few units left? You may be eligible for Last to Complete status. SSA Advocacy Service (SAS) can help you understand what this means and support you through the process.

What does "Last to Complete" mean?

Last to Complete refers to students who have one or a small number of units remaining to finish their course and graduate. This can include:

  • Failing your final unit(s)

  • Needing to repeat a unit not offered until a future study period.

  • Special circumstances that delayed your final subjects

Being classified as Last to Complete can affect your academic standing, visa, Centrelink eligibility, and graduation timeline—so it is important to get clear advice.

When does last to complete status apply?

You may be considered a Last to Complete student if:

  • You have completed almost all units in your course.

  • You have one or two units remaining due to course progression, failed attempts, or other delays.

  • Your remaining unit(s) are not available in the next study period.

  • You have been asked to "Show Cause" or have received a "Proposed Exclusion" letter but are close to finishing your course.

What are my options?

Depending on your situation, you may be able to:

  • Request a special offering of a unit not scheduled in the next teaching period.

  • Apply for special consideration if personal circumstances affected your final units.

  • Submit a Show Cause statement explaining why you should be allowed to continue.

  • Seek course completion planning or an adjusted study load.

SSA Advocates can help you understand the available options and work with you to submit strong, well-supported requests.

Can I still graduate?

If you are Last to Complete and successfully complete your final units, yes—you can still graduate. However, delays in resolving academic issues or enrolling in required units can postpone your graduation.

Make sure to seek advice early so you do not miss any deadlines or opportunities to finish your course on time.

International Students

If you are an international student, being Last to Complete can affect your student visa. In some cases, you may be able to:

  • Extend your visa to complete your course.

  • Enrol in a reduced study load (with approval)

  • Access a special unit offering if your unit is unavailable.

SSA Advocates can help you understand your obligations and refer you to relevant Swinburne support services, including International Student Advisers.
